Two solar quotes can look very different even when they describe a similar system. This checklist helps you compare them fairly and ask the right questions. Get your solar quote today. We help you request quotations from SEAI-registered installers and understand your options.
Start with the basics
- SEAI registration. To qualify for a grant, the company must be registered with SEAI for the solar PV scheme. Ask for their registration details and check them with SEAI.
- System size. The quote should state the size in kWp, the number of panels and the wattage of each.
- An itemised price. Look for separate prices for panels, inverter, battery, installation and any extras, plus the price before and after the grant.
Ask about the equipment
- Panel make and model, with product and performance warranties.
- Inverter make, model and warranty, and whether it is ready for a battery.
- Battery usable capacity (kWh), power (kW), warranty length and cycle rating.
- Mounting system, and whether the roof needs any repair first.
Ask about the process
- Who applies to ESB Networks for the grid connection, and how long it takes.
- Who handles the SEAI paperwork and the post-works BER.
- The timeline from signing to installation, and how payment is staged.
- What is not included, such as scaffolding, electrical upgrades or an immersion diverter.
- Insurance, after-sales support and who to call if something goes wrong.
Warning signs
- Pressure to sign quickly or to start before you have grant approval.
- A quote that does not name the equipment or the system size.
- Promises of guaranteed savings without any assessment of your home and electricity use.
- Vague answers about SEAI registration.
A quote and a savings estimate are not the same as a formal technical assessment. The installer you choose is responsible for surveying your property and confirming what is suitable. See our guide to panels and system options for background.
