Free solar panels in Ireland: solar and battery packages from €0 for qualifying households

If you own your home and get one of seven Department of Social Protection payments, SEAI’s enhanced grant pays up to €9,000 towards solar PV and a battery. Installers on our panel handle the SEAI paperwork and wait for the grant to be paid, so packages start from €0 to you for qualifying households, subject to SEAI approval, a home survey and a suitable roof.

What “free solar panels in Ireland” actually means

Searching for free solar panels in Ireland usually leads to one scheme: SEAI’s higher grant for homeowners on certain welfare payments. SEAI lists “up to €9,000 for Solar PV panels and battery” on its page for homeowners in receipt of certain DSP payments. On this route you choose your own SEAI-registered contractor and you choose which upgrades you want.

The grant itself is not unlimited. SEAI’s solar electricity grant page says the enhanced grant covers solar PV up to 4kWp and a battery (5kWh). It pays €3,350 per kWp up to 2kWp, then €850 for each extra kWp up to 4kWp, plus a €600 flat rate for a battery. The total is capped at €8,400 without a battery or €9,000 with one.

Most of the packages below are bigger than that. The grant covers the eligible part. Depending on the package and your survey, a larger system may cost you something extra, and any amount above the grant is shown on your written quote. That is the installer’s offer, not an SEAI promise, so always get the price in writing before you sign. Exact package depends on your home and survey.

Up to €9,000

The maximum enhanced grant for solar PV plus a battery, per SEAI. Without a battery the cap is €8,400.

Up to 4kWp + battery

The PV size the enhanced grant is calculated on. A bigger array is allowed in the packages below, but the grant does not grow with it.

Your choice of contractor

On the higher grant route you pick your own SEAI-registered contractor. Solar123 is an advisory and quote-matching service and does not install.

Grant figures checked on seai.ie on 26 October 2026. SEAI can change grant rates and rules, so check the current page before you apply.

Who qualifies?

You must be the homeowner and be getting at least one of these payments now. SEAI says eligibility is linked to the homeowner: if someone else in the house gets the payment, the application does not meet the enhanced criteria.

  1. Fuel Allowance (National Fuel Scheme)
  2. Jobseeker’s Allowance for over six months, with a child under seven
  3. Working Family Payment
  4. One-Parent Family Payment
  5. Domiciliary Care Allowance
  6. Carer’s Allowance, if you live with the person you care for
  7. Disability Allowance for over six months, with a child under seven

SEAI’s domestic solar rules also require that the house was built and occupied before 2025, and a post-works BER by a registered BER assessor before the grant is paid. On Working Family Payment? See our Working Family Payment solar grant guide.

The products, in plain English

Key figures below come from each manufacturer’s datasheet or product page, checked 26 October 2026. For help choosing, read our best solar panels in Ireland guide and our solar battery storage advice.

Jinko Tiger Neo 470W (all options)

An N-type monocrystalline module in Jinko’s 60HL4 range (460–480W). Jinko’s datasheet lists 21.78% module efficiency at 470W, a 12-year product warranty and a 30-year linear power warranty. Twelve panels make 5.64kWp; six make 2.82kWp.

Sigenergy SigenStor (Option 1)

SigenStor stacks a single-phase Sigen Energy Controller (hybrid inverter) with LiFePO4 battery modules. Sigenergy’s spec page lists single-phase controllers from 3kW to 12kW, max efficiency of 97.6–98.0%, and battery modules of 6.02kWh and 9.04kWh, with 1–6 modules per controller.

Solis S6-EH1P-L-PLUS + Dyness (Option 2)

The Solis S6-EH1P(3-10)K-L-PLUS is a single-phase hybrid inverter for low-voltage (40–60V) batteries, with two MPPTs, in 3kW to 10kW sizes. Dyness’s Powerbox Pro datasheet lists 10.24kWh nominal (9.728kWh usable) at 51.2V, IP65, 6,000+ cycles, and names Solis among compatible inverter brands.

Tesla Powerwall 3 (Option 3)

Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built in. Tesla’s Irish datasheet lists 13.5kWh usable, single-phase 230V, up to 13kW of solar input across 3 MPPTs, 89% solar-to-battery-to-home efficiency and a 10-year warranty (when connected to the internet).

SAJ H2-S3 + B2 (Option 4)

The SAJ H2-S3 series is a single-phase hybrid inverter (5–10kW models, including an H2-6K-S3-IE variant) with 3 MPPTs and 97.6% max efficiency. It runs high-voltage batteries. The SAJ B2-10.0 is two 5kWh B2 modules: 10kWh rated, 9kWh usable, IP65.

Why the battery size matters

A battery stores daytime solar for the evening. Bigger is not always better: it should suit your usage. SEAI’s battery grant is €600 whatever the size. Read our battery advice before you choose.

What’s included and how it works

Solar123 is an Irish solar advisory and quote-matching service. We don’t install: we pass your enquiry (with your consent) to installers on our panel, who survey and quote. Each package includes the panels, inverter and battery listed, installation by the installer, and Option 1 includes the BER. Confirm everything else, such as scaffolding and any meter or fuse-board work, on your quote.

1
Check you’re eligible
Confirm you’re the homeowner, you get one of the seven payments, and your house was built and occupied before 2025. SEAI has a “Check eligibility” tool on its page.
2
Home survey
An installer surveys your roof (orientation, shading, condition), your fuse board and where the battery and inverter can go. If the roof isn’t suitable, the package may change or may not be possible.
3
SEAI grant application
The grant is applied for through SEAI’s online portal, by you or with your installer’s help, once you’ve chosen your SEAI-registered contractor. SEAI says it won’t accept applications for installations that have already started, so nothing goes on the roof before approval.
4
Installation
The installer fits the panels, inverter and battery. SEAI’s standard terms give an 8-month window to complete works after approval.
5
Post-works BER
A registered SEAI BER assessor carries out a BER on your home. This is required before the grant is paid. It’s included with Option 1.
6
Grant paid
Installers on our panel handle the SEAI application with you and wait for the grant to be paid once works are complete, so you don’t pay the grant-funded amount up front. Get the payment terms in writing before you sign anything.

Not on a qualifying payment?

You can still get SEAI’s standard domestic solar grant if your home was built and occupied before 2025. It’s smaller, so a package like those above will cost you something. See our cost of solar panels in Ireland guide for what to expect and our solar grants Ireland page for every scheme.

Installers on our panel will still survey and quote. Ask for prices with and without a battery so you can compare.

FAQs

Are these really free solar panels?

For qualifying households, installers on our panel offer these packages from €0 to you, subject to SEAI approval, a home survey and a suitable roof. The SEAI grant (up to €9,000) covers the eligible part. Smaller systems can come in at €0; larger packages may cost extra, shown on your quote. It is not guaranteed: if you don’t qualify, SEAI doesn’t approve, or your roof isn’t suitable, the offer doesn’t apply. Always get the price in writing.

Does the grant cover a 5.64kWp system and a 10kWh battery?

Not in full. SEAI says the enhanced grant is for solar PV up to 4kWp and a battery, capped at €9,000. A 5.64kWp array gets the 4kWp maximum (€8,400) plus the €600 battery grant. Any cost for the extra size is shown on your quote.

What if someone else in my house gets the payment?

SEAI says eligibility is linked to the homeowner. If the qualifying payment goes to another household member, the application doesn’t meet the enhanced criteria. You may still qualify for the standard grant.

Can I choose my own installer?

Yes. On SEAI’s higher grant route you choose your own SEAI-registered contractor or One Stop Shop. We can introduce installers on our panel, but the choice is yours.

Is filling in your form a grant application?

No. Sending us an enquiry is not a grant application. The application is made through SEAI’s portal. We help you understand your options and match you with installers who can survey and quote.

Which package should I choose?

It depends on your roof, your usage and where a battery can go. Option 3 has a smaller array but the biggest battery; the others have more panels. The installer’s survey will confirm which suits your home. Read our battery storage advice and Working Family Payment guide too.
