The SEAI solar grant 2026 package changed significantly from 6 October 2026: a new €600 battery grant, eligibility extended to newer homes, an enhanced grant of up to €9,000 for qualifying households and an effective 45% rate for businesses (pv magazine, 30 September 2026). This post sets out what changed, what stayed the same and how to apply. Figures were checked on SEAI’s solar electricity grant page on 26 October 2026.

What changed in 2026
1. A €600 battery grant
SEAI battery grants were withdrawn in 2022 (Irish Times). From October 2026, SEAI pays a flat €600 for a battery of 5kWh or more (SEAI application guide v6.0, 12 October 2026). If you install PV and a battery together, one application covers both. If you already have solar, you can apply for the battery separately, though a standalone battery installation carries 23% VAT rather than 0%.
2. Homes built before 2025 now qualify
The rule is now that the house “must have been built and occupied before 2025” (SEAI). Before the change, homes built since 2021 were excluded, which the Micro Renewable Energy Federation had lobbied against (Agriland, 28 September 2026). If your home was built in 2021–2024 and you’d been told you weren’t eligible, check again.
3. Enhanced grant of up to €9,000
Homeowners receiving one of several Department of Social Protection payments, including Fuel Allowance, Working Family Payment, One-Parent Family Payment, Domiciliary Care Allowance and Carer’s Allowance (if living with the person cared for), can get €3,350 per kWp up to 2kWp and €850 per extra kWp up to 4kWp, capped at €8,400 without a battery or €9,000 with one (SEAI; SEAI eligibility). pv magazine reported that solar and batteries for medically vulnerable households would be fully funded. See our free solar panels guide for the full list of qualifying payments.
4. Business grant at an effective 45%
For new applications between 6 October 2026 and 6 July 2027, SEAI pays the lower of its grant table and 45% of the invoiced cost, up to €325,200. Existing applications aren’t increased (SEAI).
What stayed the same
- The panel grant stays at a maximum of €1,800, as confirmed for 2026 in January (gov.ie).
- 0% VAT on supply and installation for private homes (Revenue).
- You must use an SEAI-registered company and wait for approval before starting works.
- Homes with previous SEAI solar PV funding at the same MPRN aren’t eligible.
- A post-works BER is needed before the PV grant is paid.
- You have 8 months from approval to complete.
Demand is high. The Irish Times reported more than 31,000 SEAI solar PV grant applications in the first seven months of 2026. SEAI says applicants receive the grant amounts in effect when they apply, so if you’ve been holding off, the date you submit your application is the one that counts, not the date you first got a quote.
How to apply for the SEAI solar grant in 2026
- Get written quotes from SEAI-registered companies and choose one.
- Have your MPRN, Eircode, IBAN and the year your home was built ready.
- Apply online through SEAI’s grant portal and wait for your approval.
- Your installer submits the NC6 to ESB Networks; SEAI says this usually takes at least 4 weeks.
- Install, then arrange a post-works BER.
- Your installer uploads the documents; SEAI says payment usually takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Our SEAI solar grant application step-by-step guide covers each stage in detail, and our solar grants Ireland page compares every scheme, including TAMS for farms.
What the 2026 changes mean for you
- Newer homes (built 2021–2024): you may now qualify where you didn’t before. Check the build and occupation date against SEAI’s rule.
- Existing solar owners: the €600 battery grant is open to you as a separate application, but weigh it against the 23% VAT on a standalone battery installation.
- New installs: putting panels and a battery in one contract gets 0% VAT on both and a combined grant of up to €2,400.
- Households on qualifying payments: the enhanced grant can cover most or all of a typical system. SEAI says you choose your own registered contractor.
- Businesses and farms: the 45% rate is time-limited to applications made by 6 July 2027. Farms can compare it with TAMS 3 (60%, €90,000 ceiling, per Teagasc), but can’t combine the two.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting work or buying materials before approval. SEAI’s guide says you can’t apply once grant-aided works have started.
- Changing the installer or system size after approval without telling SEAI.
- Forgetting the post-works BER, which must be done before the PV grant is paid.
- Assuming an older quote reflects the new rules. Ask installers to show the 2026 grant amounts separately.
- Letting the 8-month completion window run out.
Worked example
Illustrative grant arithmetic using SEAI’s published rates:
| System | Standard grant | Enhanced grant |
|---|---|---|
| 2kWp | €1,400 | €6,700 |
| 3kWp | €1,600 | €7,550 |
| 4kWp | €1,800 | €8,400 |
| 4kWp + 5kWh battery | €2,400 | €9,000 |
FAQs
How much is the SEAI solar grant in 2026?
Up to €1,800 for panels plus €600 for a battery of 5kWh or more, so €2,400 in total. Enhanced grants go up to €9,000.

Yes, if it was built and occupied before 2025 and meets the other conditions.
Can I get the battery grant if I already have solar panels?
Yes. SEAI says existing PV owners can apply for the battery grant separately. A standalone battery installation is charged at 23% VAT.
